Dr. Margaret Bender – Published Two Books from Cherokee speakers with illustrations by a Cherokee artist

Cherokee StoryIn summer of 2017, with a grant from Wake Forest’s Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, Bender edited and published two books containing stories from Cherokee speakers with illustrations by a Cherokee artist.  These books are unusual because they are not translations from English and contain monolingual Cherokee texts.  They will be used in elementary grade Cherokee language education in North Carolina and Oklahoma, and will be used to test the hypothesis that students will learn features of Cherokee language and culture from such non-translated works that they are not learning from the more widely-available translations from English.  A recent WFU Anthropology graduate, Jacob Daunais, helped produce the Cherokee syllabary copy of one of the books, and our IT guru, Jeff Nichols, helped with layout.Cherokee Story
